What
is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy
is the art of healing through the Law
of Similars. When taking a homeopathic case, the prescriber
takes into account the whole person
including their physical complaints, personality, and emotional and
mental difficulties. |
Gentle Medicine that Opens Doors:
Homeopathy
uses the minimum dose possible
to effectively treat the
patient. One of my teachers once described homeopathy as a
means to open doors: it opens a door that was previously stuck for a
person and allows them to go through it. They then move out
of the state that they were stuck in. So homeopathy is a
gentle medicine in that it does not force someone through that door, it
only provides a choice or opportunity.
For
example, if someone gets angry every time someone calls them a name
or looks at them wrong, then they are stuck in this place of
overexpressing anger. They have difficulty choosing another
option besides getting angry. A correct remedy can open the
possibility of expressing a different emotion such as indifference to
someone looking at them strangely.
This is very different
from the approach of giving someone tranquilizers or sedatives to
dampen the emotion of anger or calm someone down. The problem
is not that they need to be calmer, but that they need another way to
be in the world. In this instance, homeopathy does not
replace the work that the person needs to do to learn how to deal with
their anger (that is going through the door); it only opens the door to
the possibility of other choices. |
My Teachers:
I began
my study of homeopathy with
Robin Murphy, ND
and continued it with Will
Taylor, MD
and Dayadhar Durr Elmore, DC, LAc, ND
at the National
College of
Naturopathic Medicine.
I have continued my education and refined my skills as a
homeopath with Paul Herscu, ND and Amy Rothenburg, ND of the New
England School of Homeopathy. |
What
Can You Expect at a
Homeopathy Visit?
Every
homeopathic practitioner approaches the visit a little differently, but
most classical homeopaths have a relatively similar way of interviewing
a patient. A typical first visit takes between 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
The interview process goes into detail about the patient's chief
complaints, general health, personality, and mental health.
The homeopath really needs to understand exactly what the patient
experiences with their pathology and in every day life. Follow-up
visits usually last 30-45 minutes. Frequency of follow-up visits
vary from patient to patient, but once per month is average in the
beginning. |
