The endocrine systems (also known as the hormonal system) is the second major system used to control the functions of the body.  The other major system that does this is the nervous system.  The two systems work together to allow proper maintenance and function of the body.  The endocrine system uses chemical messengers called hormones to control organs and tissues all over the body.

Some major endocrine glands and their functions:
